Discover the Isla Cabritos National Park in the Independencia region!
This park hosts the Lake Enriquillo, the largest in the Caribbean with an area of 300km². The lake is 30 meters below sea level and its unique environment is in constant evolution. In the center of the lake, the Cabritos Island, last refuge of the famous native cacique Enriquillo, with its typical fauna of iguanas, scorpions, crocodiles and birds (60 different species including red flamingos, egrets and herons). The rainfall precipitation of this region is the lowest in the country, making it the driest place of the Caribbean. The vegetation is mainly made of cactus (50 species, most of them endemic).
This lake is the world largest American crocodiles reserve. Nearly 400 crocodiles lay their eggs there and spend their days around that part of the lake where a cold river meets the salty lake.
You will also have the chance to swim – not with the crocodiles – but in one of the natural sulfureted water pools (often used in the field of cosmetology for skin care). In the afternoon, hike to the Taíno cave “Las Caritas” with its petroglyphs and enjoy an amazing panoramic view over the lake and the mountains of Bahoruco. The Lake Enriquillo is subject to climatic and environmental changes, especially rising water levels.
Between the mountains of BAHORUCO and NEYBA, the lake is at 30 meters. below sea level and is in constant evolution.
Discover this unique ecosystem where iguanas, scorpions, cactus and the biggest population of American Crocodiles, of the Caribbean, all live together.
The area around the Lago Enriquillo is one of the country’s most beautiful regions. The lake lies almost 40m below sea level. On the way to the lake we will take a photo stop at the statue of Enriquillo, also the eponym of the lake. At the beginning of the 16th century Enriquillo was a famous chief of the Taino Indians. Due to its remote location, the park has become a first-rated natural paradise and home for varied species of herons and many other birds. It is also a refuge for crocodiles as well as rare rhinoceros-iguanas. With a little luck you will encounter one of these impressive animals. On the way back, you will have the opportunity to take a dip in the natural swimming basins of Neyba before driving back to your hotel.
