Explore another treasure of the Jaragua National Park: Oviedo Lagoon!
Among all the attractions of the country, Oviedo Lagoon is the best place to watch the most beautiful aquatic birds of the Dominican Republic.
This laguna is formed with more than 24 small islands, homes for herons, sterns, golden spoonbills, frigate birds, white egrets, pelicans and of course pink flamingos.
With 24 wild and small islands, Oviedo Lagoon is the best place to watch the most beautiful water birds in the Dominican Republic. Besides from seeing many herons, frigate birds, pelicans, and beautiful pink flamencos, you could observe the Rhinoceros Iguanas, in their natural habitat.
Drive along the scenic coastal road via “San Rafael”, “Paraiso” and “Los Patos”. A bit further in direction south you will reach the “Oviedo Lagoon”. Only a small strip of land separates the lagoon from the ocean. After a short walk along the lagoon, a boat ride will show you the beauty of the nature from another point of view. The Oviedo Lagoon consists of 22 islands of different sizes and vegetation. On a stop of one of the islands you have the chance of seeing iguanas in nature. The hike then will take you across the small island through a bleak landscape where cactuses dominate the scenery. Enjoy a perfect view over the lagoon, the Jaragua national park, the Caribbean Sea and the mountains of Bahoruco from a scenic outpost. Head back to Barahona, but stop first in Los Patos to take a refreshing dip in the river.
