Baoruco, formerly also called Bahoruco, is one of 31 provinces of the Dominican Republic. The province of Baoruco is located in the south-west of the country, bordering the provinces of Independencia, Barahona and San Juan. In the province are the Sierra de Neiba and the Lago Enriquillo.
Special features of the Baoruco region
Neiba is a small town in the north of the Salzsees. The merging of the Dominican and Haitian faith is interesting. Each year the Gagá is danced in Easter week. The cult combines elements of voodoo, spirituality and Christianity.
Landscape and people
People live on agriculture and breed goats and cows. Cooking bananas and a little wine are cultivated in this barren area. On the way to Lago Enriquillo, the journey takes you through impressive tree branches and typical Dominican villages. The road from Neiba to La Descubierta, the starting point for the visit to the national park Lago Enriquillo, leads along the Sierra de Neiba on the north side and the salt lake on the south side. Cacti and banana plantations alternate. Dried rivers, bare fields, cacti. Only occasionally a watering canal – and at 40 degrees in the shade: Deserts, another world, which one would not have thought possible in the Caribbean.
